Steve is dispatched to
Camp
Leigh
as a private and given strict orders to avoid drawing any attention.
Meanwhile, Nick calls a conference with Peggy and General
Philips to discuss what should be done.
Nick tells them he will have everything checked in Dr.
Erskine’s lab to see what things Owen stole.
Every one of Erskine’s associates will be interviewed. He
tells Peggy to follow up on Owen’s history, when he came over, and
who he spoke with. Any
contact should be questioned, and possibly detained.
At
camp
Leigh
, Steve falls in line as a private, and tries to hide what he
discovers is a formidable body.
During drills he finds that his reflexes are faster and more
accurate than the other soldiers.
One day he catches James Barnes, a young worker at the camp,
spying on some men in the motor pool.
He finds out that James, nick named Bucky, is trying to find
out who has been taking tools from the garage.
Bucky helps in the garage and is getting blamed for taking
the tools, or loosing them. One
theory is that he is selling the tools on the black market.
If he doesn’t crack this case, he’s going to get drummed
off the base. Steve
agrees to help Bucky find out who is taking the tools, but tells him
that snooping around like this will get both of them in trouble.
After Steve gets Bucky to leave, he sees some men taking a
truck away from the garage. He
runs and catches up with the truck and jumps in back.
He rides some distance and takes a note of what is in some
wooden crates. The
crates appear to be filled with explosives and ammunition.
He overhears that they fooled the checkout guards.
Once they get to a warehouse, Steve finds a dark cloth and
uses his knife to cut eye holes.
He wraps it over his head as a mask.
He looks down at his chest and sees that his name is proudly
listed on his breast. He
grabs a jacket that is lying in the back and slips it over his
uniform. The truck
stops. He waits for the
men to gather around. Just
before they open the back he springs out the back and into their
midst. He takes two out
with one roundhouse kick, and then sweeps around knocking three
others down the ground. He
jumps up and punches one more, then picks him up and uses him to
throw against a man who had pulled out a Tommy gun.
He glides through the others and knocks them out cold.
The truck starts to leave and he realizes that someone got
into the cab. He chases
the truck and jumps onto the driver’s side running board.
The driver opens the door, but Steve holds on.
Steve wrestles with the man, and finally pulls him out of the
truck and shuts it off. He
returns to the warehouse and begins tying up the traitors.
Just then, someone steps out of an office up above him.
It is Owen, who looks much bigger than he did before.
He took the serum. He
doesn’t recognize Steve.
“Bravo,” Owen says, “You stopped my latest shipment.
But you will die here with the rest of these men.”
“You are a traitor to
America
,” Steve yells.
“And who are you? Mr.
America
?”
Owen pulls a gun and
shoots at Steve. Steve
flips out of the way and hides behind a large box.
Then he sees that Owen has lit a fuse.
The place is going to blow.
He looks back up and Owen is gone.
Then he hears the truck start up again.
He has a choice: Go
after the truck, or save the men.
He could also try to stop the fuse, but he doesn’t know
what other fuses may be going, too.
He rushes to the men and picks them up, two at a time.
He hauls three loads of them and drags out another three with
a rope, but doesn’t save four others before the building blows.
He pressures one of the men who woke up to find out who they
were working for, and what they were doing with the explosives.
He finds out that they work for the Red Skull and Master
Man.
They are going to blow
up the
New York
harbor.
Steve runs back to
camp, all 20 miles of it. By
the time he gets there it is nearly roll call.
He gets to his bunk just before Sgt. Duffy calls them out.
He is reprimanded for missing evening roll call, but
dismissed. He rushes to
make a call, but finds Peggy waiting for him.
She tells him that they got wind of the smuggling, and then
found the men tied up in the field.
They were told that some man with a mask, who was as strong
as six men, took them apart and then left.
Steve admits his involvement grudgingly.
Peggy tells him to follow orders in the future and keep his
ears and eyes open for what is going on.
Steve tells her about the plot to blow up the
New York
Harbor
.
Meanwhile, Owen
Masters, now Master Man, is in a hideout convulsing.
His muscles are growing larger and he’s obviously feeling
ill. He commands some
men to keep preparing for the next step.
The location is nondescript, but appears to be an old,
industrial building. He
convulses again and his body vibrates with muscle twitches.
He reaches over to the files he took from Dr. Erskine and
flips through them. A
deep voice echoes through the room.
“You have failed to get me the proper formula,” the Red
Skull says. “But you
have found something far more valuable.”
The Skull’s hand
reaches out of the darkness and lifts a file.
The cover is obscured from sight.
The Skull laughs an evil, deep laugh.
Back at
Camp
Leigh
, Steve is peeling potatoes with Bucky.
James doesn’t have to peel them, but wants to hang out with
Steve. He asks Steve if
it was him who caught those saboteurs that were stealing from the
motor pool. Steve denies
it, claiming to be too uncoordinated to do that kind of stuff.
Elsewhere, Peggy
rounds up a team of commandoes under Nick’s orders.
She tells them that she will coordinate an attack on an old
warehouse where they believe Nazi sympathizers are working.
She and Nick coordinate the attack and send the men in.
The operation turns into a slaughter, though, as they get
spotted and routed. As
they flee, Peggy gets caught and Master Man takes her with him as he
leads the exit from their building.
Once the dust settles, Nick searches for clues and can find
nothing. Whoever
coordinated this operation is very smart and didn’t leave a clue,
much less a path in his wake. Nick
surmises that it is the work of the Red Skull.
When he finds a corpse with a red, burnt face he’s sure of
it and calls it in. The
Red Skull is on U.S. Soil.
Steve is in the middle
of drills when he gets called out of line by Sgt. Duffy.
Duffy berates Steve and then tells him to go to the barracks
where he finds Nick waiting for him.
He is told that Peggy got captured and that the Skull is
stateside. They need him
to follow their orders to stop the Skull from getting out of the
U.S.
and to rescue Peggy. It
is obvious from Steve’s response that he has feelings for Peggy.
He is taken to
Nick’s base where he is told that the original idea behind the
Super Soldier program was to have a special team of agents with a
special body armor. When
the project was infiltrated and destroyed, the idea was scraped.
Now, General Philips has an idea.
Nick thinks it is so crazy it might work.
They will counter the Red Skull with a symbol of freedom and
the American spirit. Nick
tells Steve that he likes the ideas Steve wrote down earlier that
day. Steve is taken
aback.
“Captain
America
,” Nick says. “I
like it.”
Once Steve is given
the uniform he puts it on and steps out for his first time wearing
the colors. His image is
imposing, with the proud A on his head and the sharp, small eagles
wings flanking his helmet. The
Shield is solid and seems to fit on his left arm.
The thin chain mail of his chest armor accents his physique.
“Let’s go get ‘em,” Nick says.
Through the next week
Captain
America
barnstorms through the countryside busting small operations, and
saving high ranking officials who travel with important documents.
Finally Cap reaches
New York
, riding on his custom motorcycle.
He changes into his military uniform and checks into a flat,
paying cash. He’s back
in his home turf. He
knows who will have information on any underground activity.
He goes down his old street to find the thugs.
When he does he finds Arnie being ruffed up by a couple of
them. He runs into an
alley and comes out behind the thugs dressed in his new uniform.
They turn to see him and try to rush him.
He takes them out with little or no effort.
He helps Arnie back up. Arnie
thanks him, but backs up, not sure how to take this man.
He rushes home. Cap
turns back to the thugs and wakes them up for some information.
In a harbor shack
Master Man is hulking out even more.
His eyes are those of a mad man.
He orders to get the ship ready.
He tells them to be careful of the special cargo.
The Skull doesn’t want anything messed up.
Steve calls Nick and
tells him that it appears the bomb may be a hoax.
Nick doesn’t want to base a decision on a street thug, and
tells him to check it out anyhow.
Cap rushes to
Liberty Island
to find the bomb. He
finds a group of men who are setting up something, and he fights
with them. The struggle
takes longer than he thought it would, and he learns he cannot
underestimate his opponents. He
manages to subdue them, and shut down the bomb.
He interrogates one of the men and finds that Peggy is on a
ship that will be leaving soon, and there’s no way he can stop it.
He leaves
Liberty Island
and swims to shore since there are no boats (they all left while he
was fighting). He
reaches the shore and gets on his motorcycle.
He has to make it to the only harbor that Nick hasn’t
checked, and it is 20 miles away.
If he doesn’t make it, Peggy may die, and the Skull and
Master Man will escape.
